Common Rockchip BSP & Device‑Tree Pitfalls In Linux Development

Working with Rockchip Linux SDK, many engineers spend weeks debugging weird issues: board boot hang, peripheral not working, random reboot or unstable power rail. A large portion of these bugs come from mis‑configuration in device‑tree(DTS), not hardware fault.

First, power supply domain configuration error. Rockchip SoC divides different peripherals into independent power domains. If you enable a hardware block in DTS without turning on its corresponding power regulator, the peripheral will never initialize. Common cases include PCIe, MIPI‑CSI camera and USB3 controller. Always cross‑check PMIC register and DTS power‑domain settings.

Second, wrong pinmux settings. One physical GPIO pad can be multiplexed to several different functions. Incorrect pinmux assignment will result in UART, SPI, I2C or Wi‑Fi module failure. Many developers copy device‑tree fragments from reference board without modification, not noticing carrier board hardware difference.

Third, improper timing for DDR and storage. Wrong DDR timing parameters inside DTS will trigger DDR training failure at U‑Boot stage, leading to random crash under heavy load. eMMC or SDIO clock strength mis‑configuration causes intermittent read‑write error, file system corruption.

Fourth, overlook thermal zone configuration. Without correct thermal policy in DTS, the SoC may not trigger frequency throttling properly. Under high working temperature, chip overheats without warning and shuts down suddenly.

Best practice for Rockchip Linux BSP development: Start from official reference DTS file, modify incrementally. Do not copy large chunks from unrelated hardware versions. Validate each peripheral one‑by‑one. Test under temperature stress and full‑load burn‑in before moving to pilot production.
